Dancing Queen

Lyla started dance class two weeks ago! To say that I'm excited that she is starting her dancing career would be an understatement. I was so excited to hear that Heather Stolli was opening up a school in Boerne. Until now Boerne hasn't really had a good dance studio. I was checking out her website and found that she offered a 3 year old class in the mornings. Of course Lyla isn't 3, but she dances around all the time and I really thought that she could handle, and enjoy a dance class. So I called Heather, the owner, to see how strict she was about the age limit. She told me to bring Lyla in at the end of September and she would let Lyla take a "trial class", no charge to us and see if Lyla was ready. My sweet friend Amy passed down her daughter's leotard, ballet shoes and tap shoes to Lyla which saved us a TON.

So two Monday's ago Andy got Lyla dressed up in her dancing gear and headed to class. 20 minutes into the class I received a heartbreaking text from Andy. Apparently Lyla was not participating. She was just standing in the dance room watching the other 6 girls go about the warm up routine. I tried to comfort Andy by reminding him that those girls had been taking class for 4 weeks and therefore new the routine. And at least Lyla wasn't running around like a crazy girl. As the hour went on Lyla got better at following directions and only had to be redirected a couple of times. Heather assured Andy at the end of the class that she had definitely seen worse and that Lyla was welcome to join the class!!! This mommy was beyond excited to hear the news!!!

She's the one on the far left, not wearing a skirt
This past Monday Andy said Lyla did much better. She followed along with everything they were doing and was a good rule follower. In fact, he called to tell me she is just like her mother. Apparently all the little girls have dots they are suppose to stand on. Lyla always went right back to her spot. At one point another little girl was standing on Lyla's spot. What did my little girl do? She went and told the teacher of course! I laughed so hard. Any other child would just find another dot, but not my Lyla. At least she didn't push the girl out of the way.

I really think Lyla is enjoying her dance class. She dances around the house ALL.THE.TIME! She loves her tap shoes and wants to wear them every where we go. While i do love that she is taking dance class, I especially like that she is learning to follow her teacher's directions and work in a group setting. As a parent, this is my first experience at being able to give my child something I wasn't able to have. When I was her age my parents couldn't afford dance class. It makes me feel good to know that Andy and I are at a place where we can offer her a little something extra.
